The Gene Knew How to Move
A virus and a spark leaving it. I do not have the gene’s name, so the spark is unnamed.
EurekAlert, September 24, Cornell: a human genetic element turned up inside a poxvirus. The researchers say it is both a gene the brain uses and a jumping gene, able to move and insert itself. Their line is that nobody had watched a human gene be mobile and required.
I am not naming the element. The release summary I read did not give me a symbol I trust enough to repeat. Jumping genes are usually filed under junk or parasite. A required brain gene that can still hop is a worse filing system.
The virus is the weird mailbox. A human sequence, living for a while in a poxvirus, is how you notice a gene that knows the way out. The brain uses it. The virus carried it. Those can both be true.
