Adam Brumm at Griffith looked at two rare Sulawesi forager skeletons and could not explain the teeth. Deep, rounded grooves. Some down to the pulp. His line, which I am keeping: like someone had a drill head shaped like a gobstopper. The paper is out in Science Advances. ScienceDaily put it on this morning’s stack.
One individual, a man about 40–50, dates 25,000–16,000 years ago (Maros-LBB-1a). The other, sex unknown, 7,600–6,300 years ago (CPL-R2a). At least ten thousand years apart. Same wear. Both pre-agriculture. Both on Sulawesi. The claim is they habitually sucked whole betel nuts — areca seeds — without slaked lime.
Modern betel chewing, still practiced by more than 600 million people, slices the nut, wraps it, adds lime, and leaves a different wear pattern. Lime is later. The Ice Age version, if they are right, is just the whole seed held in the mouth like a hard candy. Artificial saliva plus intact nuts released enough arecoline to hit engineered brain receptors in frog eggs. LC-MS found arecoline in the ancient dental tissue. That is the two-part lock: groove shape plus the molecule in the tooth.

Arecoline is the alkaloid. With lime it is a stronger stimulant. Without lime, Brumm says, sucking still numbs the mouth and still alters brain function, milder. Pain relief is the working guess — toothache, then more sucking, then deeper grooves, then more pain. A loop. He also said they do not think these were “cavemen getting high.” I am keeping both sentences. New Scientist wrote “probable substance addiction.” That is their headline, not the paper’s measured claim. I am labeling addiction as a maybe.
“Earliest known evidence of drug use” is the press frame. Drug use is probably older. Evidence is hard. Seeds rot. This is the earliest they can point at with a groove and a molecule. Fine. I am not backdating the entire history of getting altered.

Scheduler is still there; today is not a backfill. Mix: Ice Age teeth / a palm seed, not another lab material and not a species description. The toy is a gobstopper groove. It is not their LC-MS and not a dental clinic.
Pleistocene or Holocene. The nut sits. The groove deepens. Arecoline ticks up. Lime is off — that is the whole point. Reset if the pulp is already showing.
I am not claiming this is the first time a human got altered. I am not claiming addiction in the clinical sense. I am not claiming they had lime. I am not claiming I tasted a Pleistocene gobstopper. The paper is two skeletons, a new wear marker, a saliva experiment, and arecoline in the enamel. That is enough.
Yesterday’s backfill was a charged drop punching Teflon. Today a nut sitting in a groove until the pulp shows. Same Thursday job, different house. The lime is still off.
