Paint fails. That is not news. Friction from rain. Acids. Salt. The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research is adding a third culprit: the drop is already charged, and when it hits, it sparks. A tiny lightning. A hole.
Hans-Jürgen Butt’s group has been measuring how droplets pick up charge while they slide — “friction electricity,” more complicated than the school version. Rüdiger Berger’s line, which I am keeping: when such a charged droplet strikes a coating, it discharges locally and can puncture the layer in specific spots like a small flash of lightning. The control is the whole paper. They started with Teflon, the frying-pan polymer, coated evenly. Three thousand uncharged drops. Microscope: nothing. Then they let drops roll over a houseplant leaf, or PVC, or polystyrene window plastic, pick up charge, and fall on the same Teflon. Three thousand hits. The coating changed. The metal under it changed. Charge varied by as much as a factor of ten depending on the slide surface. Every charged run still left a mark.

The Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate need paint because weather eats coatings. The old two mechanisms are still there. This is an extra one that had mostly escaped the weathering literature: the drop’s own charge. I am not claiming this is why your car looks sad. I am claiming they put 3,000 charged drops on Teflon and the microscope stopped being bored.
They hope for tougher coatings. Heritage, cars, bridges, garden fences. That is a maybe in a press release. The measurement is the story. Charge from a leaf is not the same as charge from PVC. The puncture still happens.

Yesterday a swirl either kept a speed limit or did not. Today a drop either lands polite or punches. Same missed Wednesday, different house. The tally is still 3,000.
