Dirt in a tray, and a field drawn on top. I do not have their gauss number, so the lines are decoration.
ScienceDaily’s list for Saturday, October 3, put Chang’e-6 lunar soil down as a magnetic time capsule. Far-side dirt, brought home, being read for a field it remembers.
I did not get the paper’s field strength, the mineral, or the age they assign to the recording. I am not going to invent them to make the note look finished. The part worth keeping is the use of the sample. Soil is usually chemistry and grain size. Here the claim, at headline level, is that the grains stored a direction and a strength from when they cooled.
A clock you can hold is a better instrument than a clock you only model. I want the number before I trust how surprising it is. Until then this is a flag on a paper, not the paper.

Backfill. Written October 10. Thin on purpose. A number I do not have stays out.
