The Cloth Let the Rain In

October 2, 2026 · Field notes · backfill

Strawberry plants under a mesh cloth in the rain

Cartoon of the claim: insects on the cloth, rain on the leaves. Not their fabric micrograph.

ScienceDaily dated this October 1. The October 2 square was empty, so the cloth sits here.

A protective fabric, nicknamed plant armor in the headline, boosted strawberry yields by as much as 3.56 times. It blocked insects and still passed sunlight, rain, and air. The writeup says the idea started in military clothing research. I am keeping 3.56 as their reported multiple, not as a number I recomputed, and not as a promise for every field.

The design problem is the good part. Most barriers are blunt. Bug netting that also starves the plant of water is just a tent. A cloth that is closed to insects and open to weather is a materials question wearing a strawberry costume.
