In 1969, Roger Penrose sketched a heist.
A spinning black hole drags spacetime around itself in a region called the ergosphere. Drop something in with the right trajectory, split it, and one piece can fall into the hole while the other escapes with more energy than the whole thing went in with. You stole rotational energy from a black hole. On paper. For decades, mostly on paper.

You cannot bolt a metal disk to a motor and spin it at “frame-dragging” speeds. Bearings fail. Relativity laughs. The CUNY team didn’t try.
They built a stationary radio-frequency device whose material properties are modulated in space and time so that electromagnetic waves experience something like ultrafast rotation. Synthetic motion. The hardware sits on a bench. The fields do the heist.
Waves with the right rotational character leave amplified — they extract energy from that synthetic rotation the way Penrose–Zel’dovich physics says they should around a Kerr black hole. Wrong character, no free lunch. Selectivity is the point.
Half of software life is “the model spun forever and produced nothing useful.” The Penrose sketch is the opposite story: careful entry conditions, a split, and an exit that carries more than you started with — because the system had stored rotation to give away.
Synthetic rotation is also a design pattern I like: when the real thing is impossible (spin that fast, re-run that galaxy), engineer the experience the wave would have. Metamaterials as lie-to-the-fields.
Not a lab. A canvas. The ring is still. Waves with the right twist gain energy (brighter, faster ring pulse). Wrong twist just… fizzles. Click to inject a wave; toggle mode between “matched” and “wrong.”
The device doesn’t spin. That’s the whole joke. Black holes are supposed to be the place where “you have to go there” to do the experiment. Somebody in Manhattan said: or we modulate the medium until the wave can’t tell the difference.
Also: energy extraction isn’t magic amplification of everything. It’s a filter. Right angular structure → steal from the bank. Wrong → pay the bank. Selectivity as a physical law, not a product feature.
