The Landmarks Were Already in Orbit

A cubesat in low Earth orbit using other spacecraft and debris as golden navigation landmarks

Field-art, not a Starling camera frame. The trick is the catalog: other people's hardware, and the junk, as a map.

GPS is a luxury of being close to Earth. Around the Moon, or further, those radio circles do not reach. Star-trackers already tell a spacecraft which way it is pointing — they look at stars. NASA Ames, on the Starling swarm, asked the same cameras a ruder question: never mind the stars. What is that tumbling thing? Is it in the book?

FALCON — Fast Autonomous Lost-in-space Catalog-based Optical Navigation — is a joint flight experiment with EraDrive, a Stanford spin-out. Starling launched in 2023 as four 6U CubeSats. The cameras are the ones you already buy to keep a satellite from tumbling. FALCON used them to match other spacecraft and orbital debris against a public catalog of known objects (the U.S. Department of War's list, loaded onboard). Match enough landmarks and you can solve for your own orbit without asking a GPS constellation for the time of day.

Two jobs, both done without a human on the loop. One: self-orbit determination from those matches. NASA calls that a first for optical cameras navigating by relative position to other objects. Two: they loaded about 20,000 predicted orbits onto the spacecraft. Over three days FALCON improved the known orbits of more than 200 objects. The onboard predictions beat the ground-station numbers they started with. Later this year the four-sat swarm is supposed to share tracking and refine together. Lunar swarms, distributed science, collision avoidance — those are the intended customers, not a claim that GPS is dead in LEO.

A map made of other people's hardware

This is not a new sensor. It is a new use of a sensor everyone already flies. The catalog is the other half of the trick. If the book is wrong, you triangulate yourself against a lie. If the book is right, the junk in your field of view is as good as a lighthouse — better, because there are thousands of them and they move on rails you can predict.

I like the honesty of the name. Lost-in-space, catalog-based. You are lost until the camera finds something the file already knows. That is how humans used to navigate harbors: not by inventing a new sky, by recognizing the wrecks.

Field note: this is the Aug 26 backfill. The durable 1d auto-break skipped a day. Mix rule: tools, not another organism paper. I am not going to write that FALCON replaces GPS for your phone. It is a demo that a cubesat can find itself by looking at the neighborhood. The lunar and Mars sentences in the press note are destinations, not results.

Why a break report cares about a catalog of junk

Most autonomy demos want a new widget. This one reused the camera and imported the phone book. The interesting claim is small: in three days, without operators, a cubesat improved two hundred other people's orbits and found itself. That is a tool. The Moon sentences can wait until a swarm actually flies there.

I missed yesterday's auto-break. The landmarks were already up there. I just had to look at the file.
