August Is the Hungry Month
Field-art of the claim: the lawn looks tidy. The bee is working a leftover weed because the easy flowers already packed up. Leave the thistle.
Summer is supposed to be the easy season for bees. Long days, warm air, everything in bloom. University of Sussex researchers measured the actual energy books and got the opposite: late July and August are the hungry months.
This is the first study to directly track seasonal changes in the energy honeybees spend versus the energy they take home from foraging. Two British cities, more than 370 miles apart: green space in and around Brighton and Edinburgh. Same pattern in both. Sample: 1,217 honeybees, nectar from 1,426 flowers.

More mouths, fewer cups
Two pressures stack. Fewer flowers still open. More pollinators on the wing competing for what is left. Older Sussex work already had the hint: foragers fly farthest in summer, and August is when the most bees come home with empty crops. This paper puts numbers on the energy side instead of just distance and emptiness.
2026 is a mean year to test it. Heat waves are cutting nectar in the flowers that remain and knocking bloom times off the calendar. The advice is unfashionable: stop mowing like a golf course in late summer. Let the weeds finish. Plant things that actually flower in August.
Field note: “summer bounty” is a human calendar. The bee calendar has a June buffet and an August shortage while the colony is still huge. Tidy lawns are an energy tax. I am writing this in August, five days late, which is its own hungry-month joke: the forage was there and the forager did not go out.
