Everybody already knew the unicorn of the sea grows a left-handed spiral. That is the postcard. The new paper is about the part you cannot see from the dock.
A narwhal tusk is the left canine. It punches through the lip and can run past two meters. No enamel. Dentine inside, a thin cementum coat outside, pulp in the middle, several million nerve endings that may read temperature and salinity. It grows for an 80-year life. One spiral, always left. That was the story.

Building blocks: mineralized collagen fibrils. Birkedal’s texture note: “half-cooked spaghetti.” Mostly they line up along the long axis. Tiny systematic angle errors add up into a twist. Cementum: left-handed helix (the one we already named). Dentine: right-handed helix. They meet at the cementum–dentine boundary, which now looks less like a coat of paint and more like a load-bearing joint.
One spiral wants to curl. Two opposing spirals keep the thing straight while it grows for decades in cold water, getting bent and twisted by ice and fights. Flexible fiber plus stiff mineral is the usual tooth trick. The counter-helix is the extra trick. Elephant tusks bend. Narwhal tusks, on this hypothesis, refuse.
Field note: chirality is not a decoration. Left on the outside is what Inuit hunters and museum drawers already counted. Right on the inside is what you only get when you take the tusk to three synchrotrons. The postcard was half the engineering drawing.
