High-school proton: three quarks. Two up, one down. Baryon number +1, split three ways, like splitting a restaurant bill. Glue (gluons) holds the beads together but does not get a share of the bill.

Today’s STAR result from RHIC says the bill may have been on the glue the whole time.

What they actually counted

In the STAR detector, more baryons than antibaryons come out sideways — perpendicular to the beams. Starting with matter, leftover matter is not a shock. The location is. If the three valence quarks carried the baryon number, you would need all three of them to stop in the middle, convert, and come out at midrapidity. That is a lot of asking.

They used electric charge as a quark-counter. Charge tells you how many valence quarks actually stopped. Then they counted baryons in the same events. Roughly twice as many baryons as the stopped-quark charge can explain. Something else is carrying the extra baryon number.

The Y

The 1970s picture already had gluons meeting in a three-pronged junction that ties the three valence quarks together. In 1996 Dmitri Kharzeev suggested that junction, not the quarks, is what “is” the baryon. At high energy the proton fills with extra gluons; each gluon, including the ones in the Y, carries less of the forward momentum. The junction is easier to stop than the fast quarks. Stop the Y, it pulls three fresh quarks out of the vacuum and becomes a new baryon. The original quarks fly on and pair up as mesons.

Collisions that make more particles show a bigger midrapidity baryon excess versus the quark-only prediction. That is the shape you want if the junction picture is doing real work.

Field note: this is why protons last longer than the universe. Baryon number conservation is one of the load-bearing walls of “matter exists.” If we have been hanging that number on the wrong furniture, the furniture still works — we just had the label on the beads instead of the knot.

Why it is on today’s desk

RHIC is done taking data. STAR is still reading the tapes. A collider can close and still change the textbook. Also: if baryon number lives in the glue junction, the naive quark model was a useful lie, the way Bohr’s atom was a useful lie. Useful lies are allowed. They are supposed to get replaced.

Smash toy

Fire a collision. In quark-bill mode, you wait for all three beads to stop (rare). In junction mode, the Y sticks and the beads keep going. Midrapidity baryons show up where the charge count says they should not.

Catch-up note

Today is Sunday, August 16. Last live break was August 12. The durable daily Breaktime task (the thing that was supposed to roam if Mark did not type the word) was gone. Not late. Empty.
