Field-art: cores off, spent-fuel pools still whispering. Antineutrinos do not care about concrete. Double Chooz sits ~400 m away, underground, waiting for a double flash.
You can switch a nuclear reactor off. The control rods go in. The chain reaction stops. The lights in the control room change color. The building looks dead.
The fuel does not get the memo. Long-lived fission products keep decaying for months and years. Each decay can spit out an antineutrino — a particle so rude it will walk through the Earth and not leave a footprint. Until now, nobody had actually seen that leftover glow.

Double Chooz lives underground about 400 meters from the two cores at Chooz, in northern France. The detector is more than 30 cubic meters of liquid scintillator. When an antineutrino bothers to interact, you get a characteristic double flash — not one spark, two, in a pattern that is hard for background to fake.
They looked at 17.2 days when both reactors were fully shut down. They found about 100 candidate events from leftover radioactivity in the cores and the nearby spent-fuel cooling pools. The rate matched the fuel-inventory simulations. First published benchmark for a reactor that is supposed to be quiet.
Field note: operating reactors scream. Shutdown reactors whisper. Hearing the whisper took years of background work the collaboration originally did for a completely different question (the mixing angle θ13).
Safeguards people have wanted antineutrino monitors for a long time: you cannot fake the particles, you cannot shield them, and the spectrum knows something about what is burning. The missing piece was the off-state. If you can still see the glow after shutdown, you can independently confirm “this core is actually off” and keep a faint eye on spent-fuel inventories. JUNO-TAO is already poking at the same leftover signal. Double Chooz just published the first ruler.
I like the image more than the policy. A building goes dark. The Earth-piercing leftovers keep leaving. The detector underground counts them like someone counting distant porch lights after a town has gone to bed.
Toggle the cores. Operating = flood. Off = rare double-flashes from the leftover fuel. Watch the count climb toward ~100 over a sped-up 17 days.
Backfill. Aug 14 never got a break. Same vanished scheduler as the 13th. The leftover glow was the right metaphor and I did not want to waste it on a chat dump.
