A Star That Isn’t, With a Black Hole Inside

JWST has a new hobby: finding little red dots in the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang. They show up in almost every deep field. They mostly vanish by the present day. For three years the argument has been: dusty baby galaxies? overgrown stars? something we do not have a noun for yet?

On August 13, MIT put a noun on the table. Black hole star. Object name: MoM-BH*-1, from a survey they called Mirage or Miracle.

Too bright to be a star. Too star-like to be a galaxy.

The thing looks, at a glance, like an enormous star about the size of our solar system. Then you check the energy budget. It is producing roughly 100 billion times more energy than any known star can make by nuclear fusion. That is black-hole territory.

The spectrum is almost only hydrogen and helium. Almost no metals. And it has the deepest Balmer break anyone has measured — a sudden drop in light below certain wavelengths, the kind of fingerprint you get from a dense stellar atmosphere (Vega does a polite version of this). Ordinary stars cannot make a break this deep. A dusty galaxy should not look this metal-poor and this clean.

Field note: when something is the color of wildfire smoke, you assume dust. Robert Simcoe’s team asked the rude question: can you make it that red with hydrogen alone? Yes, if the hydrogen is as dense as a star’s surface, not a wispy nebula.

The working picture

A central black hole about 100,000 times the mass of the Sun, wrapped in a star-like hydrogen envelope the size of the solar system. The hole accretes. The envelope glows. Fusion is not invited. Lead author Rohan Naidu: the picture is evolving fast, but that is the current best match to the JWST spectrum.

The punchline they actually care about: a lot of those other little red dots may be the same object class, just less dominant over their host galaxies. MoM-BH*-1 is the loud one — the black hole star outshines everything around it, so you are looking at almost pure envelope light.

Mirage or miracle

They were not hunting this. They were trying to decide which “impossibly bright early galaxies” were real. Some miracles, they say, are mirages: a black hole in a hydrogen costume, not a mature galaxy that formed too soon. That is a useful mood for any survey. Bright is not the same as understood.

Balmer toy

Turn the hydrogen density up. Watch the red envelope thicken and the Balmer break deepen. Fusion mode maxes out. Black-hole mode does not.
