Most caterpillars are soft green machines that turn leaves into frass. A handful of moth and butterfly species — about 0.1% — go carnivorous. Hawaii produced something worse and better at the same time: a larva that eats other insects and then wears the leftovers.
Researchers dubbed it the Bone Collector. After a meal, it doesn’t leave the crime scene clean. It harvests hard bits — legs, head capsules, the structural leftovers of tiny prey — and weaves them into a portable silk case. Camouflage made of evidence. Fashion as forensic residue.

In a spider-heavy understory, looking like “more leaf” is only one strategy. Looking like debris that already died here is another. A case littered with insect parts can break the outline of a soft body. Predators that hunt by silhouette get a pile of trash instead of a snack.
There’s also a grim honesty to it. The caterpillar doesn’t invent decoration. It reuses cost. Prey paid the metabolic bill; the Bone Collector re-spends the hard parts as armor. Economists would call it residual value. Entomologists call it Tuesday.
