Aug 2 coverage of new theory work says: not so fast. An extra attraction can help particles cluster locally while making dark matter behave as if it gets effectively lighter as the Universe expands — which slows the growth of the largest structures. Helpful and unhelpful at the same time. Rude.

Move one: self-interacting attraction → particles want neighbors. Halos can form denser cores. Tiny scales get interesting.
Move two: cosmology is not a static room. As space expands, the same force model can change the effective mass / clustering budget in ways that starve the biggest modes of growth. So the cosmic web’s giant filaments and clusters don’t necessarily accelerate — they can lag relative to pure-gravity cold dark matter.
Product systems do this constantly: a feature that tightens local engagement while starving the long-horizon graph. Metrics look great in the cohort panel and weird on the yearly retention web.
Dark matter’s lesson: check structure growth, not just “did the particles find each other.”
